I feel incredibly lucky to work in a profession filled with meaning, connection, and growth, where humanity and vulnerability take center stage. As a therapist, my goal is to create a safe, nonjudgmental, and compassionate space for you to express yourself. Whatever you bring to therapy, we will address it from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective. From the top, we will work on immediate, practical coping skills to help you feel better, and from the bottom, we will take a ‘psychodynamic’ approach that explores the underlying causes of your feelings, possibly rooted in your early life experiences. Through this process, you will become more aware of how those experiences have shaped you, learn to release the outdated patterns that no longer serve you, and ultimately feel more at peace with yourself.
Over the past decade, I have treated people with everyday challenges as well as severe mental illness. I have worked in a variety of professional settings in New York City, including a community health center, an inpatient psychiatric unit, a medical hospital, a college mental health program, and federal detention facilities. The bulk of my experience was five years at an inpatient psychiatric hospital, including during the height of the pandemic. In my therapy practice, I primarily see people with depression, anxiety, PTSD, trauma, spiritual distress, addictions, ADHD, and relationship issues.
I hold a master's degree in social work from Columbia University. Earlier in life I studied linguistics, obtaining a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and a PhD from Georgetown. Through linguistics, I discovered how language and culture affect perspective, ideology, and mental health, and I bring this cultural competence to my work as a therapist today.
